Preflight and Departure
Before departing on a flight from San Diego to Fresno, the pilot visually inspected the fuel tanks and found both to be full. The aircraft took off at approximately 1515 PST, with the pilot initially selecting the left fuel tank for engine operation.
Inflight Fuel Selection Issues
While over the Seal Beach area, the pilot switched to the right fuel tank. About two minutes later, the engine began running roughly and the pilot noted a drop in fuel pressure. In response, the pilot reselected the left tank, and the engine returned to normal operation.
Later, over the Lake Hughes area, the pilot momentarily selected the right tank again and experienced the same problem. At that time, the pilot believed there would be sufficient fuel in the left tank to continue the flight to Fresno.
Engine Failure and Emergency Landing
When the aircraft was on arrival at the ALTTA intersection (the initial approach fix for the ILS runway 29R approach), the engine lost power. The pilot selected the right tank but was unable to restart the engine. An emergency landing was made in an open area. After rolling approximately 100 to 150 feet, the aircraft hit a ditch and sustained extensive damage.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the aircraft revealed that the left fuel tank was empty and the right fuel tank was full. Further examination found that the right fuel tank vent tube was obstructed with insects and debris.
