Incident Overview
A pilot reported that the engine gradually began to lose power shortly after takeoff. The airplane subsequently descended and crashed into trees near the end of the runway.
Post-Crash Examination
After the accident, an examination of the aircraft revealed that the carburetor heat control was in the 'hot' position. The pilot stated that he did not use carburetor heat during the flight or during the pre-flight run-up. Further examination of the aircraft after removal from the crash site showed impact-related marks on the carburetor heat control push-pull rod system, indicating that the control was in the 'hot' position at the time of impact. The carburetor heat control was not readily visible to the pilot due to its location.
Engine and Fuel System Findings
Examination of the engine revealed no evidence of any pre-existing mechanical malfunction or failure. No evidence of contamination was found in the airplane's fuel supply or system.
Environmental Conditions
The ambient air temperature was reported to be 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the density altitude was estimated to be 2,700 feet.
