Accident Overview

Witnesses reported that the pilot made two low passes over the airstrip after takeoff, then turned west and began a climb. One witness, after glancing at the aircraft, heard the engine become quiet, as if shut down for a landing. The witness did not consider this unusual because engines were often throttled back near the strip.

Crash Location and Damage

The aircraft was later found where it had crashed in a steep nose-down attitude on a heading of south, approximately half a mile west-southwest of the airstrip. Aircraft damage was typical of a slow-speed impact.

Engine and Systems Examination

No evidence of engine power was evident, and no preimpact part failure or malfunction was found. The carburetor heat was found in the cold/off position. Temperature and dew point were 78°F and 67°F, respectively; icing probability charts showed that carburetor icing was possible at rated power. Auto fuel was placarded for the aircraft, and auto fuel was found in the carburetor.

Fuel and Tank Conditions

The aircraft was not refueled before the flight, but a witness estimated there were 5 gallons in the main tank and 7 gallons in the auxiliary tank. Both tanks were ruptured during impact, and an odor of fuel was noted. The auxiliary fuel valve was found in the 'open' position, although it was to be closed except to drain auxiliary fuel to the main tank in level flight only.
