Accident Sequence
The aircraft was conducting a low pass over an open field when it struck trees, crashed, and subsequently caught fire. The wreckage burned after impact.
Witness Observations
A witness reported that the aircraft had circled the area two or three times at low altitude before the accident. The witness also noted that the engine was running erratically. Additionally, several open fields were present in the vicinity.
Examination Findings
An examination of the aircraft revealed that the ignition system wires leading to the spark plugs were deteriorated. No other pre-impact part failure or malfunction was found that would have resulted in the accident. However, the engine was damaged by fire, which may have affected post-accident analysis.
Aircraft History
The last annual inspection of the aircraft was performed on November 14, 1983. Flight time since that inspection was approximately 13 hours. The pilot was an Inspection Authorization (IA)-rated mechanic who had been hired by the new owner to return the aircraft to an airworthy status and ferry it to another airport.
