What happened
The pilot was operating a float-equipped airplane on a small lake, attempting to execute a standard takeoff. During the initial climb phase, the aircraft was unable to gain sufficient altitude to clear the opposite bank of the waterway. Consequently, the right main float struck the terrain at the base of the bank. The momentum carried the airplane forward onto the adjacent shore, where it sustained damage to the left wing.
The investigation
Post-accident examination confirmed that the aircraft had impacted the ground during the takeoff roll and initial climb. The damage was localized to the right main float upon contact with the terrain and subsequent structural stress on the left wing as the fuselage settled onto the shore. No mechanical failure of the propulsion system or flight controls was identified as a primary factor in the inability to clear the obstacle.
Findings
The pilot assessed that variable gusty wind conditions significantly increased the takeoff distance required for the specific weight and configuration of the aircraft. The pilot acknowledged that he did not adequately compensate for these adverse weather conditions during the critical phase of flight. This lack of compensation contributed directly to the failure to clear the opposite bank.
