An instrument-rated pilot received two weather briefings recommending against VFR flight. En route, ATC lost contact after a descent. Witnesses observed a steep dive; wreckage scattered widely.

Accident Synopsis

The pilot, who held an instrument rating, obtained two weather briefings prior to the flight. In both briefings, VFR flight was not recommended. Despite this, the pilot filed a VFR flight plan, though it was not activated.

Flight and Contact

En route, the pilot informed air traffic control (ATC) that he was descending from 11,500 feet to 9,500 feet. Shortly thereafter, ATC noticed a Mode C transponder readout indicating an altitude of 7,500 feet. Attempts to contact the pilot were unsuccessful, as there was no response.

Witness Observations

Witnesses reported seeing the airplane in a steep dive. However, none of the witnesses observed the aircraft impact the ground.

Wreckage and Recovery

Debris from the right wing was found scattered over a wide area, with some pieces located as far as half a mile away. The engine was recovered from a depth of at least 25 feet. Examination of the attitude gyro revealed rotational damage marks on its rotor.

Medical Information

No autopsy was performed, and the toxicology report was not significant. The pilot's wife stated that the pilot had been prescribed 'Vasotic' medication for high blood pressure.
