A helicopter on a power line patrol struck a static line, causing the main rotor and transmission to separate and the aircraft to crash. All three occupants died.

Accident Details

The helicopter was conducting a specialized power line patrol to perform 'Korona measuring' for a leakage check of the transmission line. The operation required the helicopter to fly at a constant altitude and speed, maintaining a distance of 100 feet or less from the power line. While patrolling eastbound, the main rotor struck the north static line. Subsequently, the main rotor, swash plate, and transmission/rotor mast separated from the helicopter, and the aircraft crashed.

Search and Rescue

When the helicopter did not return from the patrol, a search was organized. The wreckage was located the following day at 1045 Mountain Daylight Time.

Occupants and Injuries

The pilot and one passenger were deceased at the scene. A second passenger appeared to be alive but died before medical assistance arrived.

Investigation Findings

Examination of the wreckage revealed no preimpact part failure or malfunction of the helicopter. The investigation determined that this was the pilot's first power line patrol flight. On his application for recent employment with the company, the pilot indicated he had over 1,900 hours of flight time; however, only 585 hours could be verified. He did not receive mission training for this flight.
