Incident Overview
A pilot conducting an aerial application flight reported that after loading the helicopter, he brought it to a hover to check systems before continuing the takeoff. Following lift-off, the pilot stated that he did not have sufficient power and attempted to regain rotor RPM but was unable. The helicopter subsequently moved forward into a 4-foot-high cotton crop and touched down.
Touchdown and Rotor Damage
During the touchdown, the pilot applied aft cyclic to prevent the helicopter from rocking forward. According to his account, the tail rotor then struck the ground, causing it to fail and resulting in damage to the main rotor. An FAA investigator reported that the tail boom was cut off and the tail rotor blades were destroyed.
