What happened
The pilot departed an airfield for a glider tow flight with approximately 10 gallons of fuel remaining in the aircraft's tanks. After releasing the glider at altitude, the pilot turned back toward the airport to land. While established on final approach to the runway, the engine suddenly lost power. The pilot attempted to glide the aircraft toward the runway but was unable to make it. Before reaching the paved surface, the aircraft struck a tree and crashed.
Findings
Post-accident examination of the airframe revealed no mechanical anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. The investigation could not determine the specific reason for the loss of engine power during flight. The pilot's fuel estimate at departure was noted as a key factor in the sequence of events leading to the accident.
