Incident Sequence
Approximately twenty minutes after departure, the pilot reported that the top latch of the main cabin door had opened. An attempt to close the door was unsuccessful, and the pilot decided to continue the flight. Several minutes later, the lower latch also opened. The airplane subsequently yawed to the right accompanied by severe buffeting. At that point, the pilot diverted to the nearest airport.
While on an extended downwind leg to reduce altitude, the pilot reported that the right engine momentarily lost power. The pilot could not identify the cause and proceeded with the approach. During the final approach, while still above the glide slope, the pilot reported that one engine quit. The pilot was unable to determine which engine had failed. While looking down to scan the instrument panel for troubleshooting, the airplane descended below the glide slope while on short final. It then collided with terrain short of the runway.
Engine Test Run
After the accident, an engine test run was conducted on both engines. Both engines were found to operate at varying power settings for several minutes without issue.
