What happened
The incident began with a flight training session involving a student pilot and a certified flight instructor (CFI). The pair performed several uneventful touch-and-go landings. Following these maneuvers, the CFI exited the aircraft to allow the student to conduct a solo flight segment.
After exiting, the student taxiied back to the runway for the solo takeoff attempt. According to the pilot's later statement, he rolled onto the runway without stopping, centered the aircraft on the pavement, and applied full throttle. However, shortly after initiating the takeoff roll, the aircraft became uncontrollable. In an attempt to stop, the student closed the throttle and locked up the brakes. The aircraft subsequently collided with a pile of plowed snow and came to rest approximately 20 feet off the left side of the runway.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the pilot's actions during the takeoff roll and the resulting impact. The physical evidence indicated a collision with a snow pile located near the runway edge. No mechanical failures were reported that would have contributed to the loss of control.
Findings
The student pilot had accumulated nearly 18 hours of flight time, with only half an hour of that being solo experience. The primary factor in the accident was the pilot's inability to maintain directional control during the takeoff roll, exacerbated by the improper application of brakes after losing control. The presence of plowed snow on the airfield contributed to the severity of the impact.

Proper brake usage is critical; locking up brakes during a high-speed ground roll can lead to a loss of control and collision with obstacles.
