Accident Narrative
Shortly after takeoff, the engine lost power. The pilot performed a forced landing in a gravel pit, intentionally stalling the aircraft to achieve the lowest possible landing speed.
Engine and Fuel System Examination
Examination of the aircraft revealed residual fuel and debris in the main fuel tank. The fuel filter screen was estimated to be 20% blocked by sand and debris. Some water was present in the fuel. The carburetor needle valve was found to be binding and had a flat spot on one side, which allowed fuel to flood the bowl. The #1 spark plug was inoperative, and the #3 spark plug was oil-soaked. All spark plugs and the exhaust pipe exhibited carbon deposits.
Pre-Accident Engine Run
Two days before the accident, an airport worker started the engine, which ran for a short period before stopping. No reason for the stoppage was given, and there was no evidence that the issue was investigated further.
Additional Aircraft Details
The aircraft was equipped with a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) allowing operation on automotive gasoline, and it was being operated on that fuel at the time of the accident. The aircraft was not equipped with shoulder harnesses.
