A training aircraft experienced engine power loss shortly after takeoff due to water contamination in the carburetor and fuel tank, resulting in a forced landing on marshy terrain.

What happened

Shortly after initiating takeoff, the aircraft's engine lost power. The certified flight instructor (CFI) assumed control of the aircraft and executed a forced landing on marshy terrain. During the landing roll, the aircraft nosed over.

The investigation

Post-acc examination revealed water contamination within the fuel system. Investigators found approximately 5 gallons of water in the fuel tank from which the aircraft had been refueled prior to the flight. Water was also detected in the carburetor.

Findings

The presence of significant water contamination in the fuel supply directly contributed to the engine power loss. Despite the mechanical issues, the engine was able to run successfully after the accident occurred.

Probable cause

Water contamination in the fuel system, specifically within the carburetor and the refueled tank, which caused engine power loss.
