Incident Summary
A training flight involving a private-rated pilot (student) and a certified flight instructor (CFI) encountered a sequence of events that resulted in a ground impact. The aircraft was on an instrument training flight.
Sequence of Events
After completing an NDB approach, the crew circled to land on runway 35. According to the student, the CFI moved the right mixture control to idle cutoff. The approach continued with the right propeller windmilling. The aircraft was high on final approach, and the student adjusted the throttle to correct the situation. However, before landing, the aircraft deviated too far to the right.
As the aircraft continued, the CFI reported that it appeared they would not be able to land on the runway. He therefore took the controls to initiate a two-engine go-around. During the go-around, the aircraft began to roll to the right. The CFI stated that with no time to do anything else, he pushed the yoke forward, and the aircraft then struck the ground in a flat attitude.
Findings
The accident investigation report did not provide a probable cause for this incident. The sequence of events was documented based on statements from the student and instructor.
