Accident Details
Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft's engine quit, prompting the pilot to execute a forced landing in a field. During the landing roll, one main landing gear collapsed due to the rough ground conditions.
Findings
Post-accident inspection revealed water in the carburetor. The owner, who holds commercial pilot, airframe and powerplant mechanic, and inspection authorization certificates, reported that the aircraft had been parked for approximately 90 days after fuel was added to the tanks. He noted that when the aircraft is on the ground, the low point of the fuel tanks prevents water from migrating to the fuel strainer. The fuel tanks are equipped with threaded drain plugs, which the pilot indicated he did not remove before attempting the flight.
