Background
The pilot reported that a normal preflight and run-up were performed prior to departure. An annual inspection had been completed approximately 24 flight hours before the accident flight.
Flight Events
During the takeoff roll, when the aircraft was over the departure end of the runway, the pilot observed that the altitude was lower than normal at that point. He initiated a left turn to return to the runway. The air traffic controller then notified him that black smoke was emanating from the airplane. As the pilot continued the turn, he noted that the engine was running rough. Shortly thereafter, the engine lost power.
The pilot executed a forced landing off the runway. During the landing roll, the airplane collided with terrain and a fence.
Inspection Findings
Subsequent inspection of the engine revealed a shop rag located at the rear of the carburetor air box. The rag was wedged against the guide vanes at the top of the box, where it attaches to the carburetor.
Conclusion
The investigation documented the presence of a foreign object in the engine air induction system.
