On June 28, 1990, a Piper PA-22-160 (registration N9993D) operated by William R. Overbay was involved in an aviation accident near Sitka, AK. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING ROLL. THE CROSSWIND CONDITION WAS A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
During landing roll, a gust from the right lifted the right wing, causing the left wing to contact the runway. The airplane ground looped and the landing gear collapsed, coming to rest off the runway facing opposite direction. No mechanical failures were reported.
Accident Narrative
As the aircraft approached the airport, the pilot was aware of a crosswind condition. During the landing roll, a gust of wind from the right side of the airplane lifted the right wing. This caused the left wing to descend and strike the runway surface. The contact initiated a ground loop, an uncontrolled rotation of the aircraft. The forces during the ground loop led to the collapse of the landing gear. The aircraft came to rest off the runway, facing the opposite direction of its travel.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane at the time of the accident. The airplane was operating normally, and the incident was attributed solely to the crosswind gust encountered during the landing roll.
