Accident Details
During an airshow, a pilot was performing aerobatic maneuvers. While executing a roll, the roll rate decreased considerably after 270 degrees of rotation. Subsequently, the nose of the aircraft dropped, and the airplane impacted the water at a 40-degree nose-down and 45-degree right-wing-low attitude.
Investigation Findings
Following the accident, investigators found a package of 'Calmex', an over-the-counter antihistamine, in the pilot's clothing. Additionally, the drug diphenhydramine was detected in the pilot's blood, liver, and stomach. According to the FAA Eastern Region Flight Surgeon, diphenhydramine can cause slowed reaction times and drowsiness, and may affect a pilot's perception of equilibrium.
Toxicology Report
The presence of diphenhydramine in multiple biological samples confirms that the pilot had consumed the medication prior to the flight. The FAA flight surgeon noted the potential effects of the drug, including impairment of cognitive and motor functions relevant to piloting.
