Event Description
During a flight that had been operating without issues for approximately 20 minutes, the aircraft was prepared for a subsequent flight with about 20 gallons of fuel. The pilot conducted a preflight inspection but did not check the fuel system for contaminants. The engine run-up prior to departure was normal. Shortly after takeoff, at an altitude of about 300 feet, the engine ceased operating following an initial power reduction. Unable to return to the airport, the pilot executed a forced landing in a field. During the landing, the aircraft collided with a fence and a ditch, causing the landing gear to collapse.
Investigation
An examination of the engine found no evidence of catastrophic failure or malfunction. The fuel was tested for contaminants, and none were detected. No further examination was conducted; therefore, the reason for the loss of engine power could not be determined.
