Accident Summary
Approximately 1.5 hours after takeoff, the pilot reported a loss of engine power. When asked about her position, the pilot stated she was 'over the river.' A witness observed the aircraft at an estimated altitude of 500 to 800 feet above ground level. The witness reported that the aircraft's nose rose to a high angle, then the right wing dropped, and the aircraft entered a spin before diving into the Mississippi River.
Sequence of Events
No preimpact mechanical failure was found during the investigation. The aircraft had been flown on a previous flight for about 1.4 hours, using fuel from the right fuel tank. There was no record of the aircraft having been refueled after that flight.
Post-Accident Examination
During the post-accident examination, the fuel boost pump was found in the 'ON' position. Both fuel gauges were indicating empty, and the fuel selector was positioned to the right tank.
