Incident Overview
During cruise flight, the right engine of a multi-engine airplane suffered a loss of power. The pilot received clearance from air traffic control to proceed to a nearby airport. After entering the traffic pattern and setting up for approach, the pilot executed a go-around over the runway.
Engine Surge and Loss of Airspeed
As power was applied during the go-around, the left engine surged, leading to a loss of airspeed. The pilot then decided to attempt a landing on a road.
Landing and Collision
During the descent, the airplane struck the tops of several trees. It landed hard on the road, then slid into a tree and a mailbox pole.
Post-Accident Inspection
Federal Aviation Administration inspectors discovered that the auxiliary fuel tanks were empty and the fuel selector switches were positioned to the auxiliary fuel tanks. The main fuel tanks were found to be nearly full.
