On September 27, 1990, a Piper PA-18A (registration N9279D) was involved in an aviation accident near Birchwood, AK. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO CORRECTLY ANALYZE THE WIND AND ITS EFFECT ON THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING; THEREBY FAILING TO MAINTAIN PROPER DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
An aircraft departed the gravel strip adjacent to runway 01 immediately after touchdown due to loss of control, with light wind conditions reported at the time.
What happened
According to witness accounts, the airplane was conducting a landing operation on a gravel strip situated directly adjacent to runway 01. The pilot-in-command intended to land on this specific gravel surface rather than the paved runway itself. Just after the aircraft touched down on the gravel strip, it went out of control and departed off the right side of the strip.
The wind conditions at the time were from 210 degrees at 8 knots, gusting to 12 knots.
