Incident Overview
A private pilot departed on a short visual flight rules (VFR) cross-country flight to his home airport. Upon arrival, the area around the home airport was fogged in. The visibility was estimated to be 3/4 of a mile, with a ceiling varying from tree-top level to 700 feet above the ground.
Witness Observations
Several witnesses reported hearing the airplane flying around the area for 15 to 30 minutes. They described the sounds as resembling a 'crop duster'. Two witnesses briefly saw the airplane emerge from, and then re-enter, the low clouds. During one observation, the airplane came out of the clouds, executed a steep banking maneuver during a pullup, and subsequently stalled. The airplane then rolled to the left and collided with the ground at a steep angle.
Subsequent Findings
The sequence of events indicates that the airplane was maneuvering in low cloud conditions before it stalled and impacted terrain. No additional information regarding the aircraft, pilot, or specific cause was detailed in the preliminary report.
