Flight History

The flight was cleared for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach. Approximately 10 miles from the runway, the pilot reported that the glideslope was not functioning. The flight was then cleared for an Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) approach. At 1.5 miles from the runway, the aircraft was lost from radar contact.

Witness Observations

Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft fly overhead at tree-top level with the engine not running. The aircraft subsequently struck trees and then crashed into the ground in an inverted position.

Aircraft Examination

Examination of the wreckage revealed that the propeller exhibited no rotation damage. No evidence of a pre-crash engine malfunction was noted. The mixture control was found in the cruise lean position, and the carburetor heat control was in the cold position. No instrument approach plates were found open in the cockpit.

Pilot Medical Information
