Aircraft veers off runway during aborted landing

Casualties unknown • Fort Worth, TX, US

An aircraft veered off the runway and struck a fence during a go-around attempt following a wind gust that lifted the right wing.

What happened

During an approach to Runway 17, the pilot performed a flare over the runway centerline. Just before touchdown, a gust of wind caused the right wing to lift, causing the aircraft to veer left and off the runway surface.

The pilot attempted to initiate a go-around; however, the aircraft failed to climb during the aborted landing attempt. The pilot was unable to regain control of the aircraft, which subsequently struck the top two strands of a barbed wire fence. After leaving the runway, the aircraft touched down in an open field adjacent to the airport, where it struck a tree and a second fence before coming to a final stop.

At the time of the accident, the landing was being attempted in a right crosswind. Weather observations from the nearest facility reported winds from 260 degrees at 12 knots, with gusts reaching 20 knots.

Probable cause

A wind gust lifted the right wing during the flare, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and resulting in an unsuccessful go-around attempt.
