What happened
The incident occurred shortly after the aircraft departed from a dirt strip runway. During the initial climb phase, the engine ceased operation while the airplane was at an altitude of approximately 150 to 200 feet above ground level. With power lost, the pilot initiated a forced landing procedure.
The pilot selected a highway that paralleled the departure airfield as the landing site. The aircraft touched down hard on the roadway, coming to rest in close proximity to vehicles traveling along the highway. The proximity to active traffic made the emergency landing particularly hazardous.
The investigation
Following the incident, investigators conducted a thorough inspection of the engine and associated systems to determine the root cause of the failure. The examination focused on identifying any signs of mechanical wear, component fracture, or operational malfunction that could explain the sudden loss of power.
Findings
