A commercial pilot and passenger jumped from a moving airplane after a fire erupted in the cockpit during climb-out. Both sustained serious injuries and the aircraft was destroyed by fire.

Incident Overview

A certificated commercial pilot and a passenger were returning from a short cross-country flight when the pilot elected to perform a touch-and-go landing. During the subsequent climb-out, the passenger observed a small flame on the side panel, approximately six inches forward of the left door post. The pilot executed a 180-degree turn back toward the runway.

Fire Progression

The flames in the cockpit rapidly spread around the base of the windshield and upward into the overhead ceiling. Intense heat and smoke filled the cabin, prompting both occupants to jump from the airplane while it was still moving down the runway at about 30 miles per hour.

Aircraft Aftermath

After the occupants exited, the unoccupied airplane continued off the runway and rolled to a stop between the runway and taxiway. The aircraft was subsequently consumed by fire.

Injuries

Both the pilot and passenger sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident.

Investigation Findings

Examination indicated that the origin of the fire appeared to be from a fuel line located in the left front doorpost area. Electrical wiring for the landing and position lights was also routed through the same door post.
