During a CFI instructional flight, a go-around after a bounced landing led to a wind shear encounter. The airplane yawed violently, settled, and cartwheeled upon landing.

Flight Details

The flight was conducted as a CFI instructional flight. The CFI/PIC occupied the left front seat, while a certificated commercial pilot undergoing CFI training occupied the right front seat and was flying the airplane. The CFI trainee had previously completed a touch-and-go landing and takeoff.

Sequence of Events

On the second landing, the airplane bounced. The CFI/PIC instructed the trainee to go around. The airplane lifted off and was climbing at best rate when it encountered a wind shear. The airplane yawed violently to the right. The CFI/PIC immediately assumed control of the flight controls but could only maintain a wings-level attitude. The airplane continued to settle and landed hard, then cartwheeled.

Environmental Conditions

The airport manager confirmed that virga and a dust devil appeared to engulf the airport without any warning.
