Incident Overview
An aerial application pilot experienced an engine power loss while returning from a spraying operation. The pilot stated that the engine lost power during cruise flight. He had estimated during preflight that the aircraft carried approximately 1.5 hours of fuel, but the flight lasted only about 50 minutes before the power loss occurred.
Landing and Damage
The pilot performed a forced landing in a field. During the landing, the aircraft collided with a ditch, resulting in damage. The pilot was able to exit the aircraft without further incident.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, an examination of the aircraft revealed that the fuel tanks were empty. The pilot noted that the fuel gauges were inoperative at the time of the flight.
Pilot Remarks
According to the pilot, the accident could have been prevented if he had been more careful in checking the fuel tanks and refueling after each trip.
