During a training flight, the engine failed after a touch-and-go landing. The CFI performed a force landing in an airport parking lot. Investigation revealed the fuel selector was between tank positions.

Flight Sequence

A student pilot and a certified flight instructor (CFI) had returned to the airport, where the student was to practice touch-and-go landings. On the downwind leg, the student performed a before-landing check, which included switching the fuel tanks from left to right.

Engine Failure

During the go-around following the first landing, the engine quit, then restarted, and then quit again. The CFI took over the controls and force-landed the airplane in a parking lot at the airport.

Post-Accident Examination

Examination of the aircraft revealed that the fuel selector handle was in the 12 o'clock position, which is between the left and right tank positions. A thorough examination of the engine and airframe found no evidence of mechanical malfunction or failure.

Instructor Experience

The CFI had only 36 hours as a flight instructor, including 6 hours in this model of aircraft.
