Accident Overview
A pilot experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff when the aircraft's engine stopped due to fuel exhaustion in the auxiliary fuel tank. The pilot had positioned the fuel selector to the auxiliary tank before departure.
Pilot Actions
Upon the engine failure, the pilot moved the fuel selector to the main fuel tank position, which contained an adequate supply of fuel. However, the engine only started momentarily before quitting again.
Forced Landing
Unable to maintain flight, the pilot executed a forced landing with the landing gear retracted in an open field.
Post-Accident Examination
An FAA airworthiness inspector examined the aircraft and found that the rubber fuel line connecting the main fuel tank to the fuel selector was blocked by contaminants.
Additional Information
The pilot had previously operated the engine using automotive fuel without a supplemental type certificate (STC). The pilot was also aware before the accident that the engine would lose power when the fuel selector was positioned to the main tank.
