What happened
The accident occurred following a hard landing event. According to information supplied by the operator and an FAA inspector who examined the airplane after the incident, the nose gear collapsed upon impact with the ground. Following the collapse of the landing gear, the aircraft veered to the left side of the runway. As it continued its path off the paved surface, the aircraft nosed over.
The investigation
An examination of the aircraft was conducted by an FAA inspector in conjunction with the operator. The inspection confirmed that the primary mechanical failure initiating the sequence of events was the collapse of the nose gear assembly immediately following the hard landing. No other mechanical anomalies were cited as contributing factors to the departure from the runway.
Findings
The operator provided details regarding the pilot's experience level at the time of the accident. The individual piloting the aircraft was a student pilot who had accumulated a total of 27 hours of aeronautical experience. Of those total hours, only 5 hours were logged as pilot in command (solo). The limited solo flight time suggests that the pilot may have had less proficiency in handling landing rollouts and crosswind corrections than a more experienced aviator.
