Accident Sequence
During an external load operation, the pilot of an Aerospatiale SA315B helicopter was attempting to lift a liquid dispensing bucket. While doing so, the main rotor pitch limit was reached. The pilot then reduced the collective, and at that moment experienced a total loss of engine power. The aircraft subsequently settled onto the bucket it had been attempting to lift, eventually rolling over and contacting the ground.
Investigation Findings
The investigation determined that, for undetermined reasons, the engine had experienced an over temperature condition. This condition caused the turbine blades to fail, leading to the loss of power.
