Incident Summary
During a flight, a helicopter pilot reported a partial power loss shortly after lift-off, which was followed by a complete loss of power. The pilot executed an autorotation to a field, resulting in a hard landing.
Investigation Findings
Inspection of the helicopter disclosed 22 cubic centimeters (cc) of water remaining in the air induction system near the air filter. Once the water was removed, the engine started and operated normally. The fuel aboard the helicopter was found to be of the proper grade and free of contaminants.
Environmental Conditions
Four days prior to the accident flight, a heavy snowstorm passed through the area where the helicopter was parked outside and uncovered. The accident flight was the first operation since the snowstorm.
