What happened
The pilot was conducting slow cruise flight when ice began to accumulate in the carburetor. This accumulation resulted in a significant loss of engine power, leaving the pilot with insufficient thrust to maintain normal flight parameters. Consequently, the pilot initiated an emergency landing on a private ranch airstrip.
Upon approaching the runway threshold, the aircraft's airspeed was higher than optimal for a safe landing. During the touchdown phase, the nose of the airplane pitched down excessively, causing the aircraft to nosed over and come to rest in a pond located at the end of the strip.
The investigation
Following the accident, investigators examined the engine and fuel system to determine if mechanical failure contributed to the incident. No mechanical anomalies were found with either the engine or the fuel system, indicating that the power loss was due to environmental factors rather than equipment malfunction.
