Accident Details
A Grumman American AA-5A pilot executed an approach to the east runway and perceived a significant tailwind during the flare. With 1,300 feet of the 2,000-foot-long runway remaining and at 50 mph, the pilot elected to abort the landing and perform a go-around.
Pilot Actions
The pilot reported applying full power, retracting the flaps, and turning the carburetor heat off. He stated that as the flaps retracted the last 15 to 20 degrees, the aircraft began to level off. During the attempted go-around, the aircraft impacted trees and power lines beyond the departure end of the runway.
Post-Crash Examination
An FAA examiner on site reported an 8- to 10-knot tailwind at the time of the accident. Post-crash examination of the aircraft by FAA personnel revealed that the carburetor heat was in the full out (on) position.

Standard operating procedures for the AA-5A call for carburetor heat to be off and flaps to be retracted after accelerating to a safe airspeed for balked landings.
