Takeoff Abnormalities Reported
As the airplane began its takeoff roll on runway 23, gusty winds shifted to a direct right crosswind, according to witnesses. They reported that the airplane remained on the runway longer than usual, and the nose "wobbled" back and forth as it "skipped from main (landing gear) to main." One witness stated that "the aircraft was pulled off right at the end of the runway and immediately banked to the left."
Descent and Impact
The aircraft continued in a nose-high, steep ("knife-edge") left bank before descending into trees and a residential community. A post-impact fire ensued.
Pilot Experience
The pilot, who held a multi-engine rating and a private pilot certificate, had a total flight time of 347 hours, including 253 hours in the accident make and model aircraft, as indicated by the pilot's logbook.
Investigation Findings
Post-accident investigation revealed no evidence of a pre-impact mechanical anomaly. Witnesses also reported "squirrely" winds and "squall line" type thunderstorms in the area at the time of the accident.
