Overview
A cross-country flight conducted at night and in snowing conditions ended when the airplane collided with mountainous terrain. The accident occurred after the pilot had been advised that visual flight rules (VFR) flight was not recommended due to the prevailing weather.
Flight Details
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot contacted a Flight Service Station (FSS) specialist to obtain a weather update. The specialist informed the pilot that VFR flight was not recommended because of the weather conditions. Despite this advisory, the pilot opted to continue the flight, stating that he would make contact again when closer to the destination.
Communication
As the flight neared the intended airport, the pilot attempted to contact the FSS three times but was unsuccessful. It was later determined that the specialist was not monitoring all of the frequencies during that period, which may have prevented the pilot from completing the communication.
Aftermath
The wreckage was subsequently located in a valley within mountainous terrain. Investigators found no evidence of a mechanical failure or malfunction that could have contributed to the accident.
