Incident Overview
During a solo cross-country flight, a student pilot attempted to land at an airport. Ground witnesses observed the aircraft having difficulty entering the traffic pattern in the normal manner, overshooting the base-to-final turn. Witnesses reported that the aircraft was "very high on final, carrying power, and diving toward the runway."
Landing and Runway Excursion
The aircraft touched down approximately three-quarters of the way down the runway, bounced once, and then skidded off the departure end. It traveled through a wooden airport perimeter fence and collided with a car on a bordering street.
Pilot's Account
The student pilot stated that she landed long on the runway and could not stop before running off the departure end. She reported that she attempted to perform a go-around but never got airborne. The pilot noted that her home base airport has a 3,200-foot long runway with an 800-foot displaced threshold, and she is accustomed to landing long.
