Accident Overview
During a night flight with three passengers, the pilot experienced a total loss of power during the initial climb from the airport. This forced a landing on a slope in a canyon. Post-accident examination did not reveal any mechanical anomalies in the airplane or powerplant. However, the fuel selector handle was found positioned on the left fuel tank, which was empty.
Pilot and Aircraft
The pilot held an expired student certificate. The aircraft's powerplant had been converted under a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to use automotive gasoline.
Fueling and Powerplant
Before departure, the right fuel tank was refueled with 88 octane automotive gas. The left fuel tank was empty. The powerplant was certified for automotive gasoline via the STC.
