An airplane taking off with a tailwind experienced power reduction, bounced, then continued with a nose-high attitude, drifted left, struck trees with its tail, and nosed down into trees.

Takeoff Sequence

The airplane was observed initiating takeoff with a tailwind. After becoming airborne, the engine power was heard to reduce, and the airplane bounced on the runway before returning to the air. Power was then heard to increase to full again, and the takeoff continued. The airplane drifted left off the side of the runway in a nose-high pitch attitude, climbing slowly.

Collision with Trees

As the airplane passed over trees, a witness saw the tail strike the top of some trees. Subsequently, the airplane pitched nose down into the trees.

Wind Conditions

The witness stated that the southern windsock, near where the pilot initiated the takeoff, was steady at three-quarters full and occasionally full. The pilot had earlier landed at the airport around noontime, and that landing was also downwind, with winds from the south at about 10 knots.
