Incident Overview
A pilot reported a door opening during takeoff from Runway 16R. The pilot transmitted, "I'm gonna stay in the pattern once, my door just opened up." Tower personnel cleared the pilot to land on both Runway 16R and 34L. The pilot acknowledged, and no further radio communications were made.
Witness Observations
Witnesses reported seeing the airplane at a low altitude in a steep right turn before the right wing impacted the ground, causing the airplane to cartwheel. A witness on the ramp area observed the right front door open as the airplane was taxiing for takeoff.
Examination Findings
Examination of the airplane did not disclose evidence of preimpact part failure. According to the Aircraft Operating Guide, should the door come open in flight, the pilot should return to the field in a normal manner.
Pilot Communication
The pilot's initial transmission indicated an intention to remain in the pattern due to the open door. Tower clearance was acknowledged, but no subsequent calls were made before the accident.
