Incident Details
An airplane was in cruise flight on a cross-country journey when a total loss of engine power occurred. The pilot was unable to restart the engine and executed a forced landing on a rural road near Malden, Missouri. During the landing roll, the airplane's wing struck a road sign.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the engine revealed that the mixture control cable had broken at the mixture control swivel fitting. As a result, the mixture control had moved to the idle cutoff position, which led to the loss of engine power.
The investigation did not specify the aircraft type, registration, engine count, date, operator, number of occupants, injuries, damage extent, time of day, weather conditions, or ATC involvement.
