A pilot reported that during landing, after encountering a crosswind, the airplane veered off the runway and slid into a ravine adjacent to an excavation site. The pilot stated no mechanical malfunction.

Incident Sequence

On final approach, the pilot observed an airplane that appeared to be occupying the active runway. The pilot radioed the other aircraft, which responded that it was not going to take off. The pilot then decided to land longer than originally planned. During the flare and touchdown, the airplane ballooned. The pilot added some power, and as the airplane passed nearby buildings, it encountered a right crosswind. Subsequently, the right wheel contacted the ground, and the airplane veered to the right, heading toward an excavation for a new runway. The pilot attempted to steer the airplane back onto the runway, but the right wheel slipped off the edge, and the airplane slid down a ravine.

Pilot Comments

The pilot reported that there was no mechanical malfunction. The pilot also stated that the accident could have been prevented if there had been adequate shoulder along the runway, as the excavation came within 8 feet of the runway edge.
