Incident Summary
Shortly after departure, the airplane experienced a partial loss of engine power. The pilot reported that he executed a 180-degree turn to return toward the departure runway.
Pilot Actions
Due to the airplane's airspeed and a tailwind, the pilot chose to land parallel to the runway on the grass. The pilot stated that the airplane would not stop before reaching trees at the end of the grassy area, so he ground looped the airplane. During the ground loop, the left wing contacted the ground, resulting in damage to the wing spar and landing gear.
Post-Accident Findings
Examination of the engine after the accident revealed water present in both the front and rear ignition harnesses. This condition rendered the spark plugs for cylinders number 4, 5, 6, and 7 inoperative.
