Accident Overview
The aircraft involved in the accident was on an approach to an airport located approximately midway between its departure and destination airports. The pilot had informed a weather briefer that he might stop en route. During the final approach, the aircraft collided with trees and power lines.
Witness Observations
A pilot witness observed the aircraft in the traffic pattern. According to the witness, the aircraft was flying a close-in downwind and base leg, contrary to noise abatement procedures. The turns executed by the pilot were noted to be very steep.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated to paramedics that he had lost power on the final approach.
Fuel System and Flight Manual
The aircraft is equipped with five selectable fuel tanks. After the accident, the main fuel selector was found positioned on the left main tank. The left tank was of an original design with an unbaffled configuration. This tank was on the inside of all turns during the traffic pattern. The aircraft flight manual includes a caution against prolonged turns or slips when the selected tank contains less than 10 gallons of fuel.
Engine Examination
Examination of the engine revealed no evidence of a preimpact mechanical malfunction or failure.
