Incident Overview
A pilot conducted a landing approach using wind information received from the Flight Service Station, lining up to land on Runway 22. On short final, the crab angle being used to correct for the wind was no longer needed, and the airplane began to settle. The pilot applied power and observed the windsock, noting an indication of wind from the north.
Sequence of Events
The airplane began to drift to the left. Upon touchdown, the right wing came up. The airplane continued drifting off the left side of the runway and subsequently crashed into some trees and brush.
Wind and Handling
Initial wind information obtained from the Flight Service Station was used to set up the approach. The changing wind conditions, indicated by the windsock showing a northerly wind, required the pilot to adjust. The loss of the crab angle correction on short final and the settling of the airplane preceded the power application and the observed drift.
Outcome
The airplane exited the left side of the runway and came to rest after colliding with trees and brush.
