Incident Overview
A pilot attempted to take off in an aircraft that exceeded its allowable maximum gross weight. According to the investigation, the pilot did not perform weight and balance calculations prior to departure. During the takeoff roll, the aircraft lifted off twice but failed to climb. The pilot elected to abort the takeoff.
Throttle Malfunction
While attempting to bring the aircraft to a stop, the pilot experienced difficulty moving the vernier-type throttle to the idle position. This extended the stopping distance required.
Runway Excursion
The aircraft overran the end of the runway. The pilot then steered the aircraft onto a nearby road to avoid further obstacles. While maneuvering to avoid an oncoming automobile, the aircraft impacted a tree.
Probable Cause
The probable cause was the pilot's failure to perform weight and balance calculations and his decision to attempt takeoff in an aircraft that was over the allowable maximum gross weight.
