Accident Sequence
A private pilot, flying with the local chief of police, was conducting a search for marijuana plants at an altitude of about 400 feet above ground level. Following a low pass over the search area, the pilot initiated a steep bank turn to the right in order to reverse direction. During the execution of this turn, the airplane entered an aerodynamic stall and subsequently collided with the ground.
Pilot's Report
According to the pilot, he believed that the loss of lift was caused by a gust of wind. He stated that he did not apply corrective control inputs in a timely enough manner to recover from the stall before impact.
Aircraft Examination
A thorough examination of the wreckage was conducted. No evidence of any pre-impact mechanical deficiencies or malfunctions was found. The airframe, engine, and control systems appeared to have been functioning normally at the time of the accident.
