Incident Overview
During the initial climb after takeoff, the right engine of the aircraft experienced an intermittent power loss. The certified flight instructor (CFI) assumed control of the airplane, establishing a descent to maintain airspeed while identifying the problematic engine. After the engine was reduced to idle, the pilot realized a forced landing would be necessary in a field beyond the runway end.
Landing and Impact
The touchdown was successful, but during the landing roll, the airplane struck a cow, a fence, and then a ditch. The sequence of impacts occurred after the aircraft had touched down and was decelerating on the ground.
Post-Crash Investigation
A post-crash investigation and engine inspection were conducted. However, investigators were unable to determine a reason for the power surge and subsequent loss. No mechanical or other causal factor was identified.
